The NBA world was sent into a frenzy last week when reports surfaced that LeBron James would consider a meeting with Golden State if the Warriors were able to free up cap space for a max offer.
The timing of the rumor was suspect, as the Cavaliers have struggled with consistency the past month. But according to one NBA general manager, the source of the rumor was probably LeBron James himself.
Hawks general manager Travis Schlenk said in a radio interview, via NBC Sports:
“I would be really, really surprised if LeBron went to Golden State.
“The one thing I will say about Mr. James: He is the master at using the media to get whatever story he wants out there. He’s perfected the art of the social-media game. I think that those things were probably leaked by them, by Mr. James and his camp.
“I don’t see a universe where that happens.
“It would be interesting to see. It would be interesting to see what he’d be like with the rest of those guys, with his playmaking ability and obviously with the shooting that Golden State has.”
Schlenk, who used to work in the Warriors’ front office, didn’t claim to know that LeBron leaked the rumor. He was just expressing his opinion on the matter. LeBron himself had even called the rumor nonsense.
But it definitely is rare to see a general manager call a different team’s player out like that.
