Tennis Podcast: Is Leon Smith the best Davis Cup captain in the world?

After the heroics of Davis Cup debutant Cameron Norrie in winning a rubber on clay in Spain over the weekend, and similar overachievements from James Ward and Dan Evans over the years, just how good a captain is Leon Smith?

It’s a question that The Tennis Podcast team found themselves considering shortly after Smith had joined David Law on the show to look back over an uplifting, if ultimately unsuccessful weekend. Telegraph Sport writer Charlie Eccleshare, who was in Marbella for the tie, gave his view having seen events unfold up-close. Smith’s time in charge is compared to that of Jim Courier, who took over the United States in 2010 and has yet to reach a Davis Cup final.
