THURSDAY’S PREP ROUNDUP: Rome tennis gets win over Hiram | High School

The Rome High boys’ tennis team took a 4-1 win over Hiram on Thursday in their first region match of the season.

Mark Spates and JC Camp fought at No. 1 doubles to win 6-4, 7-6, while the Wolves’ No. 2 doubles team of John Cromer and Jackson Wood won 6-3, 6-1.

Rome took the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches as William Hucks won 6-3, 6-1, and Caleb McCurry took his match 6-0, 6-2. Both Rome’s boys and girls are back in action Tuesday as they play Trion at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College.

Nigara Nizimidin pulled out a win at No. 2 singles to give the Rome girls’ tennis team a 3-2 victory Thursday over Hiram in a Region 7-5A match at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College.

Nizimidin won the first set 6-3 before fighting for a 7-5 win in the second set. The Lady Wolves’ No. 1 doubles team of Ripley Bennett and Jordan Smith won 6-0, 6-0, while Hollis Loveless and Olivia Hyde won their No. 2 doubles match 6-1, 6-1.

Rome hosts Trion on Tuesday at the Rome Tennis Center.

 Rockmart girls 5, Cedartown 0

It was all Lady Jackets in their match against cross-county rival Cedartown on Thursday as Rockmart swept the host team, 5-0.

Emma Evans won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, while Mary Ella Owen took her No. 2 singles match 6-1, 6-1. Taylor McVey worked to pull out a 7-6 win in the first set at No. 3 singles before winning the second set 6-1.

Rockmart (2-0) swept the doubles matches as well as No. 1 pair Alexis Glanton and Anna Smith won 6-2, 6-2, and Alexis Casey and Rose Haney took No. 2 doubles 6-1, 6-3.

The Pepperell boys’ tennis team improved to 1-1 on the season with a 4-1 win against Paulding County on Thursday. 

In No. 1 singles, Ben Welchel won 6-4, 6-2; in No. 2 singles, Kolby Legg won 6-1, 6-3; in No. 3 singles, Bryan Wiggins won 6-2, 6-4; and in No. 1 doubles, Wheeler Mathis and Blake Galenzowski won 6-1, 4-6, 12-10. 

The Dragons will play again Tuesday against Tuesday. 

The Pepperell girls’ tennis team earned its first win of the season against Paulding County, 4-1. 

At No. 1 singles, Abby Davenport won 6-2, 6-0; at No. 2 singles, Jayden Brumbelow won 6-2, 7-5; at No. 3 singles, Hannah Nash won 6-2, 6-2; and at No. 1 doubles, Erica Fox and Jasmine Griesemer won 4-6, 7-5, 10-7. 

The Lady Dragons (1-1) will face Armuchee on Tuesday. 

A non-region match ended in a drawfor the Armuchee boys Thursday as they were tied 1-1 with Woodland at the end of regulation.

Simon Wilson scored the Indians’ goal off an assist by Malachi Campbell. Keeper Alex Lyle had two saves. Armuchee (1-0-1) will travel to LaFayette next Thursday.
