Cardinals recall Gant, send Brebbia to Triple-A

In a move meant to keep their bullpen well stocked, the St. Louis Cardinals recalled right-hander John Gant from Triple-A Memphis and optioned right-hander John Brebbia — who earned the save Wednesday night — to the Redbirds.

Brebbia’s three-inning save capped the Cardinals’ 9-1 win over the Mets. It was the first save of his career. He has not allowed a run in his three appearances (five innings) with St. Louis this season.

GM Mike Girsch told reporters before Thursday’s game that Gant will be available to come out of the bullpen, something Brebbia would not be able to do for a while.

“With him pitching three innings last night, he’s unavailable for a few days,” Girsch said.

Gant, 25, is 3-0 with a 2.25 ERA in four starts for Memphis this season. He pitched in seven games (two starts) for the Cardinals in 2017.
