Major blow for Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp confirms midfielder’s season is over

As per a report from Sky Sports Germany, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Reds’ midfielder Emre Can will not play again this season.

Matchup

Klopp was speaking this evening in anticipation of his side’s Champions League quarter-final second-leg clash with Manchester City tomorrow evening, a fixture which the Merseysiders head into with a 3-goal advantage intact from last week’s first-leg.

Injury concern

One of the main talking points ahead of kick-off at the Etihad tomorrow has surrounded the fitness of Liverpool star man Mohamed Salah, with footage doing the rounds online this evening having suggested that the Egyptian will be available for selection:

Crocked

However, while Salah looks set for a return to the pitch, Liverpool have also been forced to deal with injuries to both Joel Matip (ruled out for the season) and Emre Can over recent weeks.

German midfielder Can was forced off with a back problem during the Reds’ Premier League clash with Watford on March 17th, and has not played since.

When asked for an update on the fitness of the 24-year-old during an interview with Liverpool’s official website earlier today, Jurgen Klopp revealed that there was hope that Can would return to action sooner than was first expected.

Worrying

However, speaking in a subsequent interview with Sky Sports Germany this evening, Klopp was asked straight up whether Can’s season should be considered as over, with the former Borussia Dortmund boss said to have responded with an affirmative ‘yes’.

As such, with rumours also mounting regarding his future at the club, the possibility now exists that Emre Can may have played his last game for Liverpool.
