To say the Region I-3A Tennis Tournament was a successful one Friday for Concho Valley athletes would be an understatement.

All five divisions were won by schools from the San Angelo area, led by Wall, which won a pair of those titles.

Wall’s Abby Alexander defended her regional title in girls singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Millsap’s Abby Sykes to advance to state for the third straight year.

In boys doubles, Wall’s No. 2 team of Shawn LaBedelle and Colton Chitsey pulled off a surprising upset over their teammates, the No. 1 team of Zach Fleming and Graham Kelso, in the final.

It was the first time all season that LaBedelle and Chitsey were able to beat Fleming and Kelso, and it couldn’t have come at a worst time for the Hawks’ seniors.

After a grueling 7-6, 7-6 loss in the final, Fleming and Kelso then had to turn around and play a team from Brock in a playback match, and they dropped that one as well, preventing them from earning a trip to the UIL State Tennis Tournament in College Station on May 17-18.

“It was pretty tough for my (No. 1 team),” Wall head coach David Hettick said. “But hats off to my No. 2 team. They hadn’t beaten them yet, and they’ve worked really hard, too.”

In boys singles, Brady’s John Marshall defended his regional title with a win over Shallowater’s Riley Robbins. Marshall took second place at state last year.

That set up a playback for the second and final spot at state between Robbins and Ballinger senior Ty Sensabaugh, who won his third-place match earlier in the day over Reagan County’s Logan Knight to keep his season alive.

However, Sensabaugh wasn’t able to pull off another win and lost 6-0, 6-1 to Robbins.

In girls doubles, Reagan County’s Isabel Holland and Jodee Perez won the title over Brock’s Macie Dehnisch and Kylee Laverty.

In mixed doubles, Sonora’s Peyton Matthews and Brian Van Winkle won the title over a team from Jim Ned.

Matthews won the state title in girls doubles last year with Sky Jennings.
