Thursday’s game

Padres at Diamondbacks

When: 6:40 p.m.

Where: Chase Field (roof hotline: 602-462-6262).

Pitchers: Diamondbacks RHP Shelby Miller (0-2, 11.42) vs. Padres LHP Eric Lauer (3-5, 5.08).

TV/Radio: FSAZ/KMVP-FM (98.7), KHOV-FM (105.1).

Miller has made two starts since his return from Tommy John surgery. Neither has gone particularly well. He was hit especially hard in his most recent one, giving up six runs on nine hits, including a pair of home runs, in a 7-0 loss to the Giants on Saturday. … If there’s a bright spot, it’s that Miller’s stuff has been firm. He’s averaging 95 mph with his fastball. … Miller’s best start of last season came against the Padres, when he gave up one run in 7 1/3 innings at Petco Park. … Lauer had something of a rough one his last time out, giving up six runs (three earned) in five innings, but posted a 2.76 ERA in six starts in June. … Right-handed hitters have a .328/.390/.520 line against him. Lefties haven’t exactly struggled with a .288/.351/.423 mark. … He has never faced the Diamondbacks.

Padres update: The Padres entered Wednesday with a 37-50 record, putting them in last place in the National League West, 11 1/2 games back of the Diamondbacks. Their offense has averaged just 3.7 runs per game, the second-worst mark in the league. Their pitchers own a 4.15 ERA, sixth from the bottom in the NL. Things have not been going well for them lately. Since pulling within four games of .500 in the middle of June, they’ve lost 12 of their past 15 games. RF Hunter Renfroe has swung the bat well since returning from the disabled list in late May, hitting .287/.356/.489 in 94 at-bats. 1B Eric Hosmer is hitting .270/.344/.426, numbers dragged down by a recent slump in which he’s hitting just .203 in his past 19 games. RHP Tyson Ross has been the Padres’ most consistent starter, at least when healthy. He has a 3.78 ERA with 90 strikeouts and 38 walks in 100 innings. LHP Brad Hand, who might be the Padres’ most valuable trade commodity, has a 3.12 ERA in 40 1/3 innings with 23 saves in 27 chances.
