Roberto Osuna traded to Astros

The Astros have agreed to a trade that could fortify their bullpen for October.

Houston has struck a deal for Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna in exchange for fellow closer Ken Giles, sources told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand and Jon Morosi on Monday. It wasn’t immediately clear whether other players will be involved in the deal, which was first reported by MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal and has not been confirmed by either club.

Osuna, currently on the restricted list as a result of a 75-game suspension that runs through Saturday, is eligible to pitch in the postseason despite violating Major League Baseball’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse policy. But Osuna is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, meaning that return date is not certain. Osuna, 23,  has a 2.87 ERA across 221 career Major League outings.

The back end of Houston’s bullpen was seen to be the only major need the American League West leaders would seriously address leading up to Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET non-waiver Trade Deadline.

The Astros optioned Giles to Triple-A Fresno on July 11, as the right-hander continues to work through struggles that date back to their World Series championship run last year. Giles has posted a 4.99 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP over 34 Major League appearances in 2018, and his struggles have continued for Fresno, with whom he has permitted five earned runs on nine hits and two walks over six appearances.
