As is often the case in sports, the traditional, established powers, tend to be the last ones standing, and in World Team Tennis it has been no different this season.
The two longest-running World Team Tennis franchises, the Philadelphia Freedoms and the Washington Kastles, are currently topping the standings at 8-1 and 6-3, respectively. The San Diego Aviators are close behind at 5-4.
Kevin King of the Philadelphia Freedoms recently secured a win for his team over the Springfield Lasers. Those numbers should be getting even better with Sloane Stephens joining the team, which is owned by league co-founder Billie Jean King, on Friday for a special match in Chicago against the Kastles.
The Freedoms’ Taylor Townsend has also been doing her part during this 43rd season of WTT:
Even though they are in second place, the Washington Kastles can never be counted out. They won five King Trophies in a row from 2011-2015. The D.C.-based team is boosted by a star-adorned lineup, including the likes of Mike and Bob Bryan and Venus Williams.
Williams relied on her vast experience on Wednesday in a dramatic, winner-take-all match point performance against the San Diego Aviators’ Naomi Broady.

Strokes of Genius is a world-class documentary capturing the historic 13-year rivalry between tennis icons Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. It is timed for release as the anticipation crests with Roger as returning champion, 10 years after their famed 2008 Wimbledon championship – an epic match so close and so reflective of their competitive balance that, in the end, the true winner was the sport itself.
