SELINSGROVE — Coleby Frye earned a controversial win on Saturday night in the first Route 35 Challenge Series race for late models of the season at Selinsgrove Speedway.
The Route 35 Challenge Series was rained out twice earlier this season.
After a lap-19 restart, Frye and Andy Haus collided in the second turn. It resulted in heavy damage to Frye’s car and forced Haus to withdraw. Frye maintained the lead and held off Dylan Yoder for the win. Shaun Jones, Jerry Bard and Jeff Rine rounded out the top five.
“It’s too bad for Andy (Haus),” Frye said. “They use the Delaware restart and make you earn every spot. You drive a little aggressive and they boo you. If this was a sprint car, they’d be cheering. We come here to win, not run second.”
The sprint car feature was won by Selinsgrove resident Cody Keller.
By the halfway point of the race, Mike Walter built up a four-second lead, but saw it wiped out when Brandon McGough stopped on the speedway.
On the restart, Keller and Walter exchange slide jobs at both ends of the speedway with Keller getting the lead out of the fourth turn.
“It was good, hard racing,” Keller said. “We got together a little bit, but Mike came up to me and said it was just racing.”
Keller — in only the second week in his new car — quickly built a sizable lead and took his first win of the season by 2.4 seconds over Walter, Chad Layton, Davie Franek and Jason Schultz.
“I’d like to thank Mark Smith and Brian Scandle for letting me use this car,” Keller said.
Keller’s father, Matt, said. “We were struggling with the Maxim. We had a third but couldn’t figure it out. Mark (Smith) has been after us to use his car. He said bring me your wing and tank Ill put it on the car and try it out.”
The Mid Atlantic Modifieds made their first appearance this year, and Rick Hulson earned his second win of the season.
Hulson took the lead after a lap two restart and opened up a big lead. He held on for the win from there.
The pro stocks were just rolling onto the speedway at press time.
Pro stock heats went to Shaun Lawton and Brandon Moser.
