The story of Jacob deGrom‘s season has been excellent pitching backed up with no run support whatsoever. That story continued to be told last night as the Mets took on the Cubs.
deGrom struck out ten Cubs over eight frames of one-run ball against the Cubs, scattering eight hits. In the process he reduced his ERA from 1.71 to 1.68. He also drove in the Mets only run with an RBI single. Cole Hamels and the Cubs bullpen was equally as effective — and the Mets squandered a man-on-third, no one out opportunity in the seventh –however, so deGrom left the game with the score tied at one. It went into extra innings and was suspended by rain, to be resumed this afternoon. No matter what happens then, deGrom will still get a no-decision in a game most pitchers likely would’ve won.
His record now stands at 8-8 on the season. He still remains one of the front-runners for the NL Cy Young Award. If, that is, enough voters can overlook his won-loss record.
