Maple Leafs’ John Tavares given 90 rating in EA Sports NHL 19

As the debate rages over who should be the next Toronto Maple Leafs captain, the fine people at EA Sports just may have cast their ballot for the storied franchise’s newest superstar.

It was revealed Thursday that Auston Matthews was rated a very respectable 89 in the forthcoming NHL 19, but on Friday John Tavares‘ rating was unveiled, and the centre is one arbitrary video-game rating point higher than his new teammate.

Coincidence? Probably, yeah.

All joking aside, a video game isn’t going to determine who will be the captain of a real-life NHL club, even if one player is one whole point better.

What this can tell you about the Leafs, however, is that in the forthcoming game, they might be pretty nasty to face online as Toronto features three players within the title’s top 50 players in Tavares, Matthews and Frederik Andersen – who is rated an 88.

So far, only Nos. 50-11 have been revealed, with Tavares slotting in No. 19.

Other interesting names revealed on Friday from Nos. 20-11 include the Calgary FlamesJohnny Gaudreau at 20, the for-now Ottawa Senators defenceman Erik Karlsson at 14 and 2018 Hart Trophy winner Taylor Hall at 16.

All of those players listed above are rated a 90, like Tavares, so we’re not exactly sure how these rankings work.

Regardless, Tavares is rated a 90 in NHL 19 and, really, the only question you should have about that is: why not just bump up a rating stat that no one understands, like poise, to get Tavares to a 91?

EA Sports NHL 19 releases on Sept. 14 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
