Creighton University Athletics – Women’s Tennis Continues Action At Drake Invitational, Sends Pair To Sunday Championship Matches

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Creighton women’s tennis team continued play at the Drake Invitational on Saturday at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. Overall, the Bluejays went 12-6 during Saturday’s action. 

Both Sarah Wilcox and Erin Epperson claimed semifinal victories during singles play to advance into championship matches slated for Sunday.

Wilcox will compete in the Flight A Singles championship after advancing because of a retirement of an Augustana individual. Epperson will represent Creighton in the Flight B finals match after claiming a three-set victory over Drake’s Daria Walczak on Saturday afternoon. Epperson fell in the first set during a tie breaker, 7-6 (5), battled for a 6-2 win in the second frame and earned the match victory with a tiebreaker win in the deciding third set, 7-6 (3). Wilcox and Epperson each won in straight-sets earlier on Saturday to advance into the semifinals. 

Wilcox will face Drake’s Carmen Palumbo and Epperson will square off against Habiba Aly (South Dakota). Both matches are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Sunday.

The duo of Ashley Ishimura and Sarah Wilcox sealed an 8-1 win during the semifinals of the Flight A Doubles draw and claimed the championship by default because their opponent will n for Sunday’s action. 

Gabby O’Connor won a pair of singles matches in the consolation draw of Flight B and will compete in the consolation final on Sunday morning against UNI’s Kate Merrick. O’Connor claimed a straight-sets win before battling out a three-set win to advance into the consolation final.

During doubles play, Julia Aguirre and Kendra Lavallee battled for an 8-5 win in the consolation draw of Flight B doubles to advance into Sunday’s consolation final.

Aguirre also went 1-1 on Saturday during Flight C singles action, while Lavellee fell during a three-set match in the Flight D consolation draw. 

Both Ishimura and Meredith Benson advanced to the semifinal round of singles action in Flight A and Flight C, respectively, but each athlete fell during the semis.

Doubles play concludes on Sunday at 9 a.m, while singles action is slated to start at 10 a.m.
