EMPORIA, Kan. (KSNT) – An Emporia State grad is making a name for himself in the NASCAR world after winning a contest.
Briar Starr has been in love with NASCAR since he was five-years-old. Starr’s love for NASCAR encouraged him to try and become a NASCAR broadcaster.
“I remember playing with my little NASCAR replica toys,” said Starr. “And just trying to reincarnate the race.”
In order to fulfill his dreams, he knew he had to do something to jump start it. Starr entered a Natural Light Beer scholarship competition, offering him the chance to have his resume and name on the side of a NASCAR car.
“Probably the fact that I was a huge NASCAR fan,” Starr said. “And they know that this is what I want to do in the future. And this could kind of be my breakthrough into the sport.”
Starr’s former Emporia State professor, Michael Dennis, knows how much Starr loves the sport.
“He and I have worked really closely throughout his program,” Dennis said. “An awful lot of personal conversations about his life and his work. I’m a big fan of Briar’s.”
Dennis said he was floored to see him win, but knows there was no other person who deserved it more.
“They picked him,” Dennis said. “Just the odds are so great. But I can’t think of…I can’t imagine anybody who would be a better candidate for them.”
Starr hopes this will get him closer to his dreams of working with NASCAR.
“Thankfully I’m lucky enough that Natural Light was able to choose me,” Starr said. “And the 37 car was a great place to have my resume on the car.”
Starr said seeing his name on the car is surreal, and a moment he will never forget. He hopes to see his name next to the NASCAR logo again.
