Sept. 18: NHL Preseason Roundup

Svechnikov, the No. 2 pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, scored a power-play goal to make it 4-1 at 7:11 of the third period.

Lucas Wallmark also had a goal and an assist, and Michal Cajkovsky and Valentin Zykov scored for the Hurricanes. Petr Mrazek, who signed a one-year contract with Carolina on July 1, made nine saves in 30:10 in his Hurricanes debut. He was replaced by Alex Nedeljkovic, who made seven saves on eight shots.

Mathieu Joseph scored on the power play for the Lightning to cut it to 3-1 at 4:38 of the third period. Andrei Vasilevskiy played the whole game and made 31 saves.

Tavares scores twice in Maple Leafs debut

John Tavares scored two goals in his preseason debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs, helping them to a 4-1 win against the Ottawa Senators at Kraft Hockeyville Canada.

Tavares was left alone in front of the Senators net and made a nifty move to beat Mike Condon for a power-play goal at 5:12 of the first period that tied the game 1-1.

Mitchell Marner had a goal and two assists, and Tavares had an assist.

Ryan Dzingel scored 21 seconds into the first period for the Senators, who played their first game since trading defenseman Erik Karlsson to the San Jose Sharks on Sept. 13.

Curtis McElhinney (12) and Garret Sparks (21) combined to make 33 saves for Toronto. Condon (18) and Marcus Hogberg (eight) made 26 for Ottawa.

Hutton, Sobotka lead Sabres past Penguins

Carter Hutton made 14 saves over two periods, and Vladimir Sobotka had a goal and an assist for the Buffalo Sabres in a 3-2 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins at KeyBank Center.

Defenseman Rasmus Dahlin, selected by the Sabres with the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, had no points and was plus-1 in 21:32 in his preseason debut.

Jake McCabe and Jack Eichel also scored for the Sabres, who outshot the Penguins 14-7 in the first period.

Penguins defensemen Will O’Neill and Juuso Riikola scored 38 seconds apart late in the third period. Casey DeSmith made 26 saves.

Scott Wedgewood relieved Hutton at the start of the third period and made 10 saves.

Flyers roll past Islanders

Carsen Twarynski, Phil Varone and Danick Martel scored 3:51 apart late in the second period to lift the Philadelphia Flyers to a 5-1 win against the New York Islanders at Barclays Center.

James de Haas and Jori Lehtera also scored for the Flyers, and Anthony Stolarz made 31 saves.

David Quenneville scored for the Islanders in the second period. Robin Lehner allowed four goals on 22 shots in 39:32. Christopher Gibson made seven saves.

Flyers goalie Alex Lyon sustained a lower-body injury during warmups.

Atkinson, Wennberg power Blue Jackets past Blackhawks

Cam Atkinson and Alexander Wennberg each had a goal and an assist for the Columbus Blue Jackets in a 4-1 win against the Chicago Blackhawks at Nationwide Arena.

Atkinson scored 36 seconds into the third period to extend the Blue Jackets lead to 3-1. Liam Foudy, who was the No. 18 pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, made it 4-1 at 18:07. Wennberg and Zac Dalpe each scored for Columbus in the first period.

J-F Berube played the first two periods for Columbus and made 14 saves. Joseph Raaymakers made seven saves in the third period.

Alexandre Fortin scored 53 seconds into the first period to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead.

Cam Ward, who signed a one-year contract with Chicago as a free agent July 1, made 13 saves on 15 shots in 30:10 in his Blackhawks debut. He was replaced by Collin Delia, who made 14 saves.

Senyshyn scores twice to lift Bruins past Capitals

Zach Senyshyn scored two goals to help the Boston Bruins defeat the Washington Capitals 5-2 at Capital One Arena. 

Senyshyn scored 8:56 into the second period to give the Bruins a 3-1 lead, and he made it 4-1 at 19:33. 

Matt Niskanen brought the Capitals within 4-2 with a power-play goal 1:44 into the third period, but Sean Kuraly scored into an empty net for a 5-2 Boston lead with 54 seconds remaining. 

Cameron Hughes gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead 1:45 into the game, but the Capitals tied it 1-1 at 4:14 on a goal by Riley Barber. Jakub Lauko made it 2-1 Bruins at 19:03. 

Dan Vladar made 31 saves for the Bruins. Braden Holtby started and made the save on six of eight shots in 28:46 for the Capitals. Ilya Samsonov made nine saves on 11 shots in relief.

Radulov paces Stars past Blues

Alexander Radulov scored two goals, Jamie Benn had two assists, and the Dallas Stars scored four times in the third period to defeat the St. Louis Blues 5-3 at American Airlines Center.

Dallas trailed 2-1 entering the third but Roope Hintz tied it 2-2 56 seconds into the period. After Patrick Maroon gave St. Louis a 3-2 lead on the power play, Tyler Seguin, on the power play, and Jason Spezza scored in a span of 1:44 to give Dallas a 4-3 lead. Radulov scored an empty-net goal to make it 5-3.

Radulov gave the Stars a 1-0 lead in the second period, but goals by Jordan Kyrou and Dmitrij Jaskin (power play) put the Blues ahead 2-1.

Ben Bishop made the save on all 16 shots he faced in 29:07 for the Stars. Landon Bow made 19 saves in relief.

Chad Johnson started for the Blues and made 15 saves on 16 shots over two periods. Jordan Binnington made five saves in relief.

Fucale, Golden Knights top Avalanche

Zach Fucale made 24 saves for the Vegas Golden Knights in a 5-1 win against the Colorado Avalanche at Pepsi Center.

Erik Brannstrom and Alex Tuch each had a goal and an assist, and Brandon Pirri, Reid Duke and Erik Haula scored for the Golden Knights, who were 2-for-2 on the power play.

Paul Stastny, who made his preseason debut after signing with Vegas as a free agent July 1, and Tomas Hyka each had two assists.

Ryan Graves scored for the Avalanche in the third period to cut it to 3-1.

Semyon Varlamov played the first two periods and allowed three goals on 24 shots. He was relieved by Spencer Martin, who made four saves on six shots.
