Where: Magnolia Green Golf Club in Moseley
Buzz: Kellam eyes its first state championship since winning a Group AAA title in 2010. Luis Park and his brother Leonard finished third and seventh, respectively, last week to help the Knights win the Region A crown. Kellam was the state runner-up last season. First Colonial is South Hampton Roads’ other state qualifier, and the Patriots’ Carley Rudlolf last week shared region medalist honors with Granby’s Rebecca DeNunzio. DeNunzio has elected miss today’s state tournament to play in the VHSL Girls State Open later this month.
Class 5 tournament
When: 8 a.m. Monday
Where: Magnolia Green Golf Club in Moseley
Buzz: Hickory, after winning last week’s Region A championship, will have to unseat a perennial power to win the program’s first state title. Deep Run, coming off a two-day 595 in the Region B tournament, has won three consecutive state titles and four of the past five. Brothers Patrick and Luke Gareiss have won the past two region tournaments, and Patrick took the title last week with a 1-under-par 70. Kempsville’s Ryan Oden and Salem’s Mason McCoy finished second and third, respectively, in last week’s Region A tournament. McCoy helped Salem nab the region’s other state tourney berth. Hickory won the one-day tournament with a team score of 317.
Class 4 Region A tournament
When: 8 a.m. Tuesday
Where: Williamsburg National Golf Course
Buzz: Great Bridge’s Kendall Turner won her second consecutive Region A title last week, but she has elected to miss today’s state tournament to play in the VHSL Girls State Open later this month. Jamestown and Warhill claimed state tournament berths with a 1-2 finish in Region A, while Churchland’s Matthew McEwen was the only South Hampton Roads individual golfer to make today’s field.
