Motorsports: Wolfe’s win caps World Series of Dirt Racing | Sports

SELINSGROVE — Lucas Wolfe had a Sunday to remember, besting Selinsgrove Speedway’s sprint car field for a $4,000 prize on the third day of the World Series of Dirt Track Racing.

The 602 modified feature was won by Dakota Kohler, while Jason Geesman was victorious in the street stocks.

Wolfe took off from the pole position and shot into the lead of the sprint car feature, followed by Saturday’s winner, Ryan Smith, Blane Heimbach, Freddie Rahmer and Jason Shultz.

Track champion Davie Franek hit the fence inside of turn four, bringing out the caution on lap four. Franek was uninjured but had to be towed from the track.

The field made half a lap before Heimbach and Rahmer got together and spun wildly down the backstretch.

Wolfe again took off from the pack and quickly built a three-second lead over Smith.

Wolfe was never again tested and led the rest of the feature’s 27 laps (a tribute to Greg Hodnett), beating Smith to the line by 7.634 seconds.

Shultz, Steve Buckwalter and Dylan Cisney rounded out the top five.

Kohler led the first six laps of the 602 modified feature when Brad Roberts brought out the caution flag. He was followed by George Gareis, Thomas Sherby, Joe Toth and Danny Bucafica.

Kohler, who competes in the sportsman division at Big Diamond Raceway, continued to lead as the battle for second heated up between Gareis and Toth, who got by Sherby. Kohler maintained a one-second lead, but, at the halfway mark, Gareis started chipping away with Toth in tow.

Gareis and Toth got to Kohler’s rear bumper and started a battle. Toth got by for second, and Gareis dropped back. Kohler and Toth finished nose-to-tail, with Kohler winning by 0.294 seconds. Gareis, Sherby and Bucafica rounded out the top five.

The win was the first of Kohler’s career.

Johnny Palm’s outside pole stop helped him get the drop to start the street stock finale, followed by closely Geesman, Chris Derrick, AJ Hoffman and Eric Tripp. Dean Hine spun and brought out a lap-two caution.

Palm and Geesman took off in a two-car, side-by-side battle, while Chris Derr and Ryan Smith did the same for third. AJ Stroup lost a tire going into turn one on lap 15, bringing out the caution.

Palm sputtered on the restart and Geesman shot under him for the lead. Palm eventually stopped on the track. Geesman survived additional restarts and hung on to win over Derr, Smith, Tripp and Hoffman.
