Murali Vijay deserves one more chance: GR Viswanath | Cricket News

CHENNAI: Murali Vijay may not have found favour from the selectors after his ordinary outing during the England tour, but former India batsman GR Viswanath believes the TN opener deserves a spot in the Test team during their next overseas assignment — against Australia. In a chat during the MA Chidambaram birth centenary function held here on Friday evening, Viswanath spoke on the rise of Prithvi Shaw, why Vijay should be recalled and more. Excerpts:

How do you assess the performance of Prithvi Shaw?

Even though it’s early days for him in Test cricket and the debut hundred came against a depleted West Indies, Shaw has shown that he’s very promising. It’s good to see him playing his shots without curbing his instincts. I have been seeing him for a while. His approach hasn’t changed much in Test cricket. He played similar strokes in domestic cricket and it shows his ability. And there is an air of authority in his stroke-making as well.

Do you reckon Shaw is equipped to excel in overseas conditions?

No one knows and you have to see him play there to analyse. But I would say, he has got the right temperament. He has got runs in Ranji, Duleep and for India. That means he has got talent. I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t be played in overseas conditions.

Should Murali Vijay get another opportunity?

He has proved himself as an opener and at the highest level. He scored runs when India played in Australia last time. Of course, he deserves one more chance.

How do you rate Virat Kohli‘s captaincy?

He is doing really well but he is yet to prove that he’s the best. He has to win a series abroad. He has come closer a couple of times, but still hasn’t done yet. As a batsman, he has proved that he can score in all conditions. In recent England tour, he showed us how good can he be. There are more expectations from Kohli the captain. He is still young as a captain. He hasn’t reached that level. But I am confident he will reach that stage one day.
