Golf: It will be father vs son at the New Zealand Golf Open next year

When David Smail won the New Zealand Golf Open his son Charlie was just three years old.

Now Charlie can call himself New Zealand Amateur Golf Champion, after claiming the title last weekend.

The victory sees him gain automatic qualification to play against his father at next year’s New Zealand Open.

Charlie Smail enjoyed the limelight of his father’s New Zealand Open victory in 2001.

Fast forward 17 years and David’s watching on as Charlie engraves his own name on one of New Zealand’s great trophies, the New Zealand Amateur Championship.

The title has eluded both David and his mum Sheree who also played professionally in Japan.

“He’s a mile ahead of where I was, he can hit shots that I just dreamed of as a kid.” David Smail said.
