IPL 2019: Mumbai Indians release Cummins, Mustafizur, Duminy | Cricket News

MUMBAI: The Mumbai Indians have released South African batsman Jean-Paul Duminy, seamers Pat Cummins (Australia) & Mustafizur Rahman (Bangladesh) and Sri Lankan spinner Akila Dananjaya, while retaining 18 players ahead of the 2019 IPL auction.

Cummins was bought by MI for Rs 5.4 crore, but was ruled out before the start of the last IPL due to injury. There were reports that Cricket Australia (CA) pulled him out due to fear of a burnout or injury during the tournament.

Mustafizur Rahman, also known as “Fizz”, was purchased for Rs 2.2 crore, but played only seven matches last season, taking as many wickets. The left-arm paceman was with Sunrisers Hyderabad previously. Duminy was bought for Rs 1 crore, but played just six matches, in which he managed only 36 runs.

MI have also released six domestic players – Saurabh Tiwary, Pradeep Sangwan, Sharad Lumba, Tajinder Singh Dhillon, UP pacer Mohsin Khan and Kerala’s MD Nidheesh.

The Mumbai franchise’s list of 10 released players thus includes one capped, five uncapped and four international players.

Amongst the domestic players retained, apart from skipper Rohit Sharma, are the Pandya brothers -Hardik Pandya and Krunal, Jasprit Bumrah, Mayank Markande, Aditya Tare, Ishan Kisan, Rahul Chahar, Anukul Roy and Suryakumar Yadav continue with the three-time champions.

The franchise has retained its other internationals – Kieron Pollard, Ben Cutting, destructive opener Evin Lewis, who had a decent maiden season on 2018, and the Kiwi pace bowling pair of Mitchell McClenaghan and Adam Milne.

MI have also backed Australia’s T20 specialist Jason Behrendorff after the left-arm quick was recalled to the national side to face the Proteas.

Rohit Sharma, under which the Mumbai franchise has won three titles, will continue to lead the side. Under the Indian opener’s leadership, they have won three IPL titles – 2013, 2015 and 2017.

The IPL player auction will be held on December 17 in Jaipur.
