There was an early wake-up call for mountain tennis fans on Saturday: Fed Cup play, live from the Czech Republic.
New Belgium Brewing hosted a watch party Saturday morning, as Team USA defended its title against the Czech team in Prague.
The 8 a.m.-to-noon live action featured the first of two days of 2018 finals play.
This follows Tuesday’s announcement that the Fed Cup returns to Asheville to begin its 2019 campaign, facing Australia here in February.
“I feel like tennis is really growing in Asheville,” said Carolyn MacFie. “I think having Fed Cup here has been really great. I think the players really enjoy being here, which is maybe why they’re planning to come back again. There’s so much to do here, why wouldn’t you want to be in Asheville?”
This is the first time since 2007 that a city was chosen to host this event in consecutive years.
The Fed Cup happens at the U.S. Cellular Center the weekend of February 9 and 10.
