Glynn Academy alumni to host golf tournament to support scholarship | Local News

Glynn Academy alumni will provide an opportunity next week for community members to support the educational endeavors of future Glynn Academy graduates.

The College of Coastal Georgia plans to host the Glynn Academy Alumni Endowed Scholarship Golf Tournament Fundraiser on Dec. 17.

The tournament will be held at the Brunswick Country Club on Highway 17. A players’ lunch will kick off the event at 11:30 a.m. Shot gun will start at 12:30 p.m.

The tournament aims to raise money for an endowment fund at Coastal Georgia that will provide a scholarship to a Glynn Academy graduate to further his or her education.

“As graduates of Glynn Academy, we want to support current GA graduates in their pursuit of a college degree at Coastal Georgia,” said Donnie Revels, a graduate of Glynn Academy’s 1964 class, who conceived the idea for the tournament. “Coming together for a worthy cause and playing golf makes it all the more fun.”

Glynn Academy alumni created the event. Revels organized the tournament with the help of Jack Kilgore and Billy Brewer, who are 1967 Glynn Academy graduates. Dan Hogan, general manager of the Brunswick Country Club, helped bring the event together as well.

Former professional golfer, commentator, US Amateur and British Amateur champion Steve Melnyk has already signed up to play, along with Glynn County Commission chairman Bill Brunson and Tash Van Dora, all-state quarterback of the 1964 Glynn Academy state championship football team.

Other community leaders and Glynn Academy graduates will be playing in the tournament as well. The tournament is open to all.

Golfer registration is $100 per person or $400 per team. The cost of being a sponsor in addition to or instead of playing golf is $100 per hole. Signs for all sponsors will be on the course.

The deadline for hole sponsorship is Wednesday.

Any donations to the scholarship fund are welcome.
