Even at temperatures below freezing, the sound of a disc hitting chains is music to the ears.

That sound could be heard Saturday afternoon at Walt Clark Middle School, where 29 disc golf players participated in Loveland’s first official tournament with the Professional Disc Golf Association, the Winter Wonderland Shootout.

“This is a big deal,” said Mark Doty, who coordinated the event and threw with other registered juniors, amateurs and even a couple of PDGA professionals on Saturday.

Doty said he was surprised by the turnout at the first-ever Loveland tournament, and that the number of serious registered players bodes well for future events in Loveland.

Bundled up in several layers of athletic clothing, the players took to the field Saturday morning, when temperatures barely broke out of the single digits. Players like Jessy Prado-Smith, Robert Tillinghast and Matthew Kelley even donned winter hats, down jackets or gloves, taking some items off when it came time to choose a disc and throw.

And throw they did, accompanied by the warm sound of applause and the cozy feeling of a below-par score.

The Winter Wonderland Shootout continues 11 a.m. Sunday at Walt Clark Middle School, 2605 Carlisle Drive, Loveland.
