ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Detroit Lions safety Glover Quin said Wednesday that he doesn’t know whether he’ll continue to play in 2019, despite being under contract with the club for one more season.
“I don’t know,” Quin said. “We’ll see.”
Quin has been a stalwart in the secondary for the Lions since he signed with the club in free agency from Houston in 2013. He has started every game for the franchise the past six seasons, part of a 147-game consecutive starts streak that leads all active safeties by 51 games.
Whether his 148th consecutive start, in the season finale against Green Bay on Sunday, was his last game with the Lions — and in the NFL — is the unknown.
Quin said he hasn’t made a decision yet, but it “depends on what the situation is” as for whether the decision will come quickly. He said he has not spoken with the Lions about whether they want to bring him back next season.
Quin, 32, contemplated retirement before this season but decided to return to the club despite sitting out the majority of the team’s offseason program for the first time.
“I mean, there was other things going on,” Quin said. “I wasn’t mulling retirement because I couldn’t play anymore. There were other things going on that maybe would have pulled me away. That was really the issue.”
Quin said he doesn’t regret returning to Detroit even after it played out with a 5-10 season and no playoff berth. Once he made the decision to return, he was fully committed to the team.
“Obviously, you play to try and win it all,” Quin said. “Doesn’t always work out that way, but can’t look back on it and regret the decision. You put a lot of thought and a lot of time into making a decision, and once you make it, you go at it.
“If it doesn’t work out, you know, I’m not going to wish I would have never done this. It’s just like, man, it just didn’t work out. Was it a bad decision? No. Had a great time, you know, getting to play football, getting to do what I love to do, getting to be around the guys, getting to have another year in the National Football League. I mean, how fortunate am I? So never look at it as a regretful decision.”
Quin is second all time in tackles among Lions defensive backs, with 423, trailing only Bennie Blades, who had 505 tackles in 126 games. Quin is second on Detroit in tackles this season, with 74. He has defended two passes but does not have an interception.
Quin is due $5.25 million in base salary if he were to return for the final season of his contract, with a cap number of $7,916,668.
