CHARLOTTE – After a Wednesday morning practice at Charlotte Latin School, South Carolina kicked off Belk Bowl week with some fun at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Led by head coach Will Muschamp the entire Gamecocks football team took turns getting in the passenger seat multiple stock cars and took a ride around the track, two laps that maxed out close to 170 miles per hour.

“It’s amazing how fast they run against those walls. It’s pretty amazing,” Muschamp said to recap his second experience after testing Darlington’s track last year. “That was a pretty breath-taking experience. It’s my first time ever going 160, 170.”

With his players standing in line waiting to hop in, Muschamp recommended they all give it a go, regardless of nerves.

Senior edge rusher Bryson Allen-Williams was spotted hopping in and out of line after watching the reactions and facial expressions on some of his teammates as they took off their helmets. Eventually, he was in line for good and was glad he went through with it.

“It feels like you’re on a roller coaster. It’s a crazy experience. They talked me into it. I was nervous, I’m not going to lie. It’s probably one of the most scary things I’ve done,” Allen-Williams said. “I would definitely say [the feeling] is like getting a big hit [on the field]. You feel every power come out of your body when you hit somebody on a big hit. That’s what I’d probably compare it to.”

Gamecocks starting quarterback didn’t need to be quoted on his reaction. His scream coming out of the car did justice.

Sophomore wide receiver Shi Smith is known to be the fastest player on the team. This was right up his alley.

“It was fun, especially around the curves. I felt like I was going to be thrown out of the car,” Smith said. “I knew they went that fast. I like going fast. It was fun.”

The Gamecocks (7-5) return to practice on Wednesday at 11 a.m., a few days away from playing in the Belk Bowl against Virginia on Saturday, Dec. 29, a noon kickoff on ABC at Bank of America Stadium.
