Serena Williams has been included in the 2018 list of The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women published by Forbes for the 15th year in a row. The American player is ranked as 79th, and she features as the only tennis player there.
Serena has been a vocal supporter of women’s rights and her controversial situation with the chair umpire Carlos Ramos in this year’s US Open, when she claimed that the umpire was being sexist, definitely had an impact worldwide.
Serena was ranked 69th in the Celebrity 100 in 2014, while she left the top 100 highest paid athletes earning $18.1 million. The German Chancellor Angela Merkel was named the most powerful woman for eight consecutive years.
The U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May is on the second place for the second year in a row, while the International Monetary Fund managing director Christine Lagarde completes the podium. Also, Ivana Trump was included. Moira Forbes, Executive Vice President, Forbes Media, said: ‘Forbes’ Most Powerful Women 2018 list reflects what is always known about power, how ephemeral it is and how volatile it can be.
The world’s most powerful women are leading amidst a tumultuous time where geopolitical tensions are on the rise, key economies are facing instability, and where trust in institutions is at an all-time low.’ Meanwhile, in a press conference, Serena confessed she is surprised with all her success in tennis: ‘I never had really big goals playing.
My goal was just to play tennis and to win tournaments, but I never had numbers in front of me. The older I get, or the more I started playing, the more numbers started to come. But still, it’s not a number thing really. I think it’s just how you feel.
