Source: Bryce Brentz on verge of returning to Red Sox

A familiar face is in line to rejoin the Red Sox.

Bryce Brentz, who was traded from the Sox to Pittsburgh during last spring training, is on the verge of finalizing a minor-league deal to sign with Boston, according to a major league source. The 29-year-old spent the majority of 2018 in the Mets’ system after being placed on waivers by the Pirates in late March.

A former first-round draft pick, Brentz has played in 34 major league games, totaling 25 with the 2016 Red Sox. His most productive professional season came in 2017 when he hit 31 in 120 games with Triple-A Pawtucket.

Part of Brentz’s deal with the Red Sox will include an invitation to major league camp. He becomes the second outfielder with major league experience the Sox have inked to minor-league deals this offseason, joining Gorkys Hernandez.
