Birmingham City lost their first home match of the season against Bristol City which means they drop to ninth in the league table.
A fifth goal of the season for Famara Diedhiou proved to be enough as the home side couldn’t find an equaliser despite coming close.
The Birmingham fans would have felt delighted before kick-off, with their side responding excellently to the disappointing derby defeat just a few weeks back. The Blues went into the game with back-to-back victories over Millwall and Preston.
Minutes before kick-off, and 21,000 fans collectively sing ‘Keep Right On’, as the two club mascots Beau and Belle circle the pitch orchestrating the noise.
However, things seemed to quieten down as the game started, with the home side clearly struggling to find their feet and obtain possession. Repeatedly, the ball was carelessly lost and met with a shared groan from the St Andrews faithful.
It quickly got very tense in the stands and the 1,300 away followers who made the two-hour journey were quick to comment on it.
“Your support is ******* ****” was directed with venom towards the home fans, who were quick to respond with “who the ******* **** are you?” Before you knew it, an insults tennis match was well underway. After all, not many were enticed by the football on display in the early stages.
Chants of “you’re just a **** Aston Villa” and “you’re not singing over there” were soon ignored by the home following, who were busy urging their side to push forward more than they were doing so.
The animosity on and off the field made for a great atmosphere.
In the second half, Famara Diedhiou gave the visitors a lead and the away stand, with its red and white flags flying, went wild.
The Bluenoses responded incredibly, belting their hearts out to ‘Keep Right On’ in an attempt to inject some life into their struggling side.
Following more sloppy errors, the restlessness around the stands grew and grew, and a number of penalty appeals were waved off by the referee, who frustrated both the players and fans all game. “You don’t know what you’re doing” was angrily shouted for at least a minute.
In the dying embers, the away fans sung “is this a library” and as the whistle blew, “how s*** must you be, we’re winning away.”
Birmingham’s next game will see them travel to Ewood Park to take on Blackburn Rovers in which they will attempt to bounce back once again.
