“I should have a clear picture by New Year,” Bhambri said when asked about his return to action on Friday.
The 26-year-old Delhi lad, ranked 137th in the world, has played only two tournaments since his first-round loss in Wimbledon in June. He suffered opening round exits at both the US Open in August and the ATP 250 event in Belgium in October. Bhambri, who has yet to resume training, scotched speculation that he has undergone surgery that would to keep him out of action longer than expected.
Meanwhile, Prajnesh Gunneswaran, the country’s No.1 singles player, and Ramkumar Ramanathan have been given main draw wildcards. Davis Cupper Saketh Myneni, who made a strong comeback this year from injury to rise from 912 in November 2017 to a current ranking of 260, and exciting Chennai talent Sasi Kumar Mukund (No. 339) have been handed the two qualifying wildcards.
The ATP 250 Series event offers three main draw wildcards in singles and two in doubles. The 28-size singles draw has four qualifying spots. World No. 6 and Wimbledon finalist Kevin Anderson and former US Open champion Marin Cilic will be returning to the event.
