England quick James Anderson has claimed a record-equalling five-wicket haul to restrict West Indies to a total of 289 early on day two of the first Test in Barbados.
Anderson added Alzarri Joseph’s wicket, caught at third slip by Jos Buttler without scoring, to his pivotal four wickets on the opening day. It moved him level with Ian Botham on 27 five-wicket hauls for England and gave him figures of 5 for 46 from 30 overs, including 13 maidens.
Ben Stokes ended the West Indies’s innings with the wicket of Shimron Hetmyer, the only home batsman threatening to convert a decent start. Hetmyer, who had been dropped on 56, reached 81 before he was caught behind by Ben Foakes.
Anderson had laboured long and hard for his first wicket on day one, striking in his 17th over to break a 46-run partnership between Shai Hope and Roston Chase.
He should have had a second one a short time later when Hetmyer drove to Buttler, diving to his right and getting his hands to the ball at short cover but failing to hold on to it. It could have proved costly had Anderson not struck late in the day with the second new ball.
Hetmyer top-scored for the West Indies with some entertaining strokes, while four of his team-mates reached 40 runs or more but failed to pass 60.
Between them, Anderson and Stokes took 9 for 105 while spinner Moeen Ali conceded 59 runs for his one wicket.
