Forget the men, we want a Warwick women’s cricket carnival

NOW is the time for the Warwick Cricket Association to start a one-day competition for women.

For the past 48 years, wives, partners, friends, sisters, mothers and cousins have followed their men around for three days at the annual Australia Day carnival.

There are a lot more women playing cricket now and we have four playing at national, Brisbane A-grade or Queensland Country level compared to one in men’s cricket, Queensland Bulls paceman Mark Steketee.

Our four women at high levels in the now are Brisbane grade players Kira Holmes and Lucy Bourke, long-time Queensland Country player Carly Cooper and our premiership winning Brisbane Heat and Australian World Cup player Delissa Kimmince.

It would be great if all the carnival teams or Warwick club teams organised a women’s team for a one-day competition totally separate to Australia Day.

It won’t hurt men to bowl to women at the nets and in preparation for a women’s carnival.

Even one day at Slade Park or a day on the two fields at Queens Park would be enough.

I have relatives who have played women’s cricket in Brisbane.

Organisers don’t have to be Warwick cricket officials, what about a couple of volunteers?
