Buss, 57, made the comments on the Zach Lowe podcast.
James joined the Lakers in the summer of 2018 after leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers.
It was the third free agency decision of his career, having left and rejoined the Cavaliers from the Miami Heat in 2010 and 2014.
This time around, however, James was much more private about his decision.
Instead of going on live national television, like in 2010 to announce his move to the Heat, James announced his decision with a simple press release.
After a meeting with Lakers president of basketball operations Magic Johnson, James took less than a day to decide on his future.
And Buss, owner of the Lakers, revealed exactly how the move transpired.
“As soon as it hits 9.01pm on that night, you’re allowed to speak to free agents,” she explained.
“As soon as it was 9.01pm you already had free agents announcing where they were gonna sign.
“So the meeting that Ervin [Magic Johnson] had with LeBron, I knew they were having that meeting. I didn’t know where it was going to be, or when it was going to be.
“I have complete confidence in Magic and I think he’s done a great job, so I knew he would do a great job in speaking to all the free agents he was going to speak to, LeBron being the number one out there in terms of what he brings to a team.
“We were optimistic but we also knew that LeBron had to take the time needed to make the decision.
“So while we were hoping for a quick decision, we wanted him to have his process.
“When we found out it was by text at 5pm the next day. I received a text from his agent, as everybody does finding out at the same time.
“I was happy he’d made the decision sooner rather than later, but we were going to wait for him to make his decision.”
