DURHAM, N.C.— With the year of 2019 approaching, let’s look back at a very successful 2018 with the Duke women’s golf program. Below are the top moments from 2018.

Lisa & Leona Maguire Graduate in May
Even though she was the top-ranked amateur in the nation for most of her collegiate career, Leona Maguire stayed four years of college and along with her sister, Lisa, received degrees in May of 2018. The dynamic duo received a degree in psychology along with obtaining a certificate in markets and management studies. The two were model student-athletes over four years in Durham earning Scholar All-America honors among many others.

Carta Creates Birdies for Babies Program
Virginia Elena Carta spearheaded the creation of the Birdies for Babies program for the Duke women’s golf program. In the first season, it raised over $10,000 to benefit the Duke Children’s Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units. The Blue Devil men’s golf program has since joined on in 2018-19 and the two programs have raised $10,565 in the fall of 2018. They are on the way to shattering last season’s total by far.

Maguire, Boonchant Tie for ACC Championship – Head to Playoff
It took a playoff at the ACC Championship to determine the individual winner as Leona Maguire and Jaravee Boonchant birdied their final holes to finish in a tie at six-under, 210, at the Grandover Resort and Conference Center in Greensboro, N.C. The duo went to a third playoff hole where Maguire ended up coming out on top to win her second ACC title.

Blue Devils Win Team/Individual Titles at Landfall Tradition
In the final tournament of the fall of 2018, Duke came-from-behind to win the Landfall Tradition as a team, while Virginia Elena Carta and Gina Kim tied for medalist honors in Wilmington, N.C.  The Blue Devils fell behind by nine heading into the final round, but Duke shot a Sunday-best three-under, 285, to catapult into the lead late in the round and won by two strokes over Arkansas.

Duke Wins Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational
For the fifth time out of the last six years and the 16th time in school history, the Duke women’s golf program has captured the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational title as the Blue Devils carded a 14-under-par, 850, over three days to win by six strokes at the Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.  Boosted by a 17-under, 271, on day one, the Blue Devils turned in rounds of 290 and 289 over the next two days to finish with the win over sixth-ranked Virginia (856). The 54-hole ledger of 850 was the tied for third-lowest score in Tar Heel Invitational history.

Dan Brooks Turns 60 – Blue Devils Send Well-Wishes
In his 35th season as the head women’s golf coach at Duke University, Dan Brooks celebrated a special day during the fall as he turned 60 years young on September 30th. Staff and former players took time to wish Brooks happy birthday from all over the world.  Over his 35 years with the Blue Devils, Brooks has established himself as one of the greatest coaches in Division I history compiling six NCAA Championships, 20 ACC Championships and a NCAA-record 133 team wins. He has been selected National Coach of the Year on six occasions and ACC Coach of the Year 15 different times.

Duke Claims ACC Championship
For the 21st time in school history, the Duke women’s golf program are ACC Champions as the top-seeded and fifth-ranked Blue Devils compiled an impressive 15-under-par, 849, to win by 27 strokes at the 6,122-yard, par 72 Grandover Resort & Conference Center East Course in Greensboro, N.C.  Duke carded rounds of 282, 281 and 286 over the three days to produce a 15-under-par, 849, to finish 27 strokes ahead of Florida State (876). Clemson (877), Virginia (885) and Wake Forest (890) rounded out the top five teams. The 15-under, 849, was the lowest 54-hole ledger in Blue Devil ACC Championship history besting a five-under, 859, a year ago.

Blue Devils Win NCAA Regional in Wisconsin
The Duke women’s golf team claimed its 10th NCAA Regional title in school history Wednesday as the top-seeded Blue Devils won the Madison Regional with an impressive 14-under-par, 850, at the 6,313-yard, par 72 University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wisc. The Blue Devils carded the second-lowest regional 54-hole ledger in school history with an 850 and won by nine strokes over Virginia (859). Other advancing teams to the NCAA Championship include Southern California (862), Arizona State (863), Ohio State (863) and Northwestern (864).

Belac Cards 10-under at ANNIKA Intercollegiate
Duke junior Ana Belac turned in a career-best 10-under, 206, against a stellar field at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate in September.  The 10-under, 206, was tied for the sixth-lowest 54-hole ledger in school history (on par 72) with rounds of 68, 65 and 73. Her 10-under, 54-hole score of 206 on a par 72 course was a career best and marked her fifth career top five placement. Belac led the field with 19 birdies and a 2.83 stroke average on par three holes over the last three days.

Duke Shoots 17-Under in Tar Heel Invitational First Round
The Blue Devils matched a school record with a 17-under, 271, in the first round of the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational at the Finley Golf Course to take the lead early.  It marked the second straight year the Blue Devils shot a 271 in the opening round of the Tar Heel Invitational, which is the second-lowest 18-hole score in the tournament history.  At the end of the day, Duke featured four golfers shooting three-under-par or better and all four were in the top 10 of the individual leaderboard. Sophomore Jaravee Boonchant led the way with a six-under-par, 66, which matched a career best round.

Maguire Cards Eight-Under at NCAA Regional
Senior Leona Maguire carded her second straight round in the 60s on her way to posting a three-day score of eight-under, 208, to finish two shots behind individual medalist Nicole Schroeder of Oregon State (-10, 206) at the 2018 NCAA Regional.  Maguire tied Ohio State’s Jaclyn Lee for second. Over the final two days, Maguire carded rounds of 65 and 69 to shoot 10-under-par. It marked her 32nd career round in the 60s and fourth consecutive top 10 finish in NCAA Regional play.

Blue Devil Alums Have Strong LPGA Season
Duke alumnae featured very strong seasons on the LPGA and Symetra Tours in 2018.  Laetitia Beck, Celine Boutier, Lindy Duncan, Brittany Lang and Yu Liu competed on the LPGA, while Alejandra Cangrejo, Leona Maguire, Lisa Maguire and Sandy Choi saw action on the Symetra and other tours.  Beck went through the LPGA Q-Series and earned her card once again for the 2019 campaign.
