RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico—Ohio State played a great round on the Rio Mar Country Club, River Course, turning in a collective three-under 285, with Will Grimmer and Caleb Ramirez tied for second place after first round scores of 69 at the Puerto Rico Classic. The field is full of heavyweights as eight of the 15 teams are ranked in the top-40 in the country, including Alabama and Georgia Tech in the top-5. Ohio State trails only NC State, Georgia, and Georgia Tech on the leaderboard as they head into tomorrow’s round.

Seniors Grimmer and Ramirez showed their experience with the course as they each came in three-under to put them in a tie for second place and only two shots off the lead. Grimmer’s round featured five birdies and got as low as four-under before settling at three-under to finish the round. Ramirez also turned in a superb round, tying his career low and carding his first round in the 60s this season. He opened the day with a double-bogey on his second hole but followed it up with five birdies to finish his round at 69. Daniel Wetterich was the third Buckeye to finish under par, shooting a one-under 71 which featured two birdies and an eagle. Will Voetsch and Laken Hinton shot 76 and 78, respectively, to round out the starting five for Ohio State.

The two Buckeye individuals, Kevin Stone and Justin Wick, represented the Scarlet and Gray well in the opening round of the individual tournament. Stone had an up and down round, trading bogeys with a team-high seven birdies to finish the round with a one-over, 72, on the Rio Mar Country Club, Ocean Course, and take sole possession of fourth place. Wick was not far behind, turning in a three-over 74, in a round that featured five birdies and the first eagle of his collegiate career.

Ohio State tees it up at 8 AM again tomorrow morning for the second round of the Puerto Rico Classic.
