BUTTE – By now most people in Butte have heard about the passing of Lee LaBreche this past weekend.
LaBrecehe, a Butte native wore a lot of different hats in the community. He was Butte-Silver Bow’s county coroner since 1996, and the head golf coach at Montana Tech where he had been a part of the staff since 2012.
Montana Tech athletic director Matt Steapn commented on the legacy Lee created as an OreDigger and a member of the Butte community. “Lee was truly great at building relationships. And that shows in the recruiting efforts that he’s been able to put together here at Montana Tech with our golf program,” said Stepan. “Our caliber of play has increased a lot not from just Lee’s knowledge of the game, but probably more from his ability to build relationships. We gotta get back on our feet a little bit, it’s gonna take some time , it’s gonna be tough. Hard to replace a guy like Lee in your life.”
Lee, a Butte Central graduate also was a defensive coordinator for the Maroons for a number of years. During those years Butte Central was regarded as one of the most talented defensive teams in the state of Montana, thanks to Lee LaBreche’s defense.
Like a lot of the most well-known, well respected people you will meet in the Mining City, Lee LaBrecehe cared for this city. He gave everything he could, and was always there to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. As the county coroner a lot of times Lee would have to break some of the most gut-wrenching news to families who just lost a loved one. But there was something about hearing it from Lee LaBreche that added a level of comfort even in the toughest of times. The Butte community lost one of its most beloved characters, but it’s what he did when he was here that will live on for years to come.
