NBA great Dennis Rodman has torn Joel Embiid to shreds over the Philadelphia star’s outspoken comments surrounding Michael Jordan.
The NBA All Star couldn’t have seen the backlash that’s come for him following his declaration that Jordan is not the greatest basketball player of all time.
Embiid last week made an appearance on The Ringer’s NBA podcast and left many basketball commentators stunned with his decision to declare Hall of Fame centre Wilt Chamberlain is the NBA’s real GOAT.
“He is not the G.O.A.T,” Embiid said of Jordan.
“To me, you got Wilt Chamberlain. He’s got all the records, and no one is ever gonna beat them. I don’t see anyone ever getting 100 points in a game. That’s it, he’s the G.O.A.T.”
Chamberlain’s record 100-point effort in March 1962 is truly the stuff of folklore — but the NBA erupted following the comments, coming out swinging in defence of Jordan’s status at the top of the pile.
Rodman continued the public trashing of Embiid on Tuesday when the former Chicago power forward lept to Jordan’s defence.
“Joel Embiid, you doing a great job for your little island or country where you from, man,” he told a TMZ.
“Shut the f*** up. Go do your goddamn job and do Philly proud. That’s the one thing they need is a championship.”
When asked to clarify if his criticism of Embiid means he believes Jordan is the GOAT, Rodman said: “You’re goddamn right he’s wrong”.
Jordan recently proved he’s still also in the running for the title of the GOAT of smack-talking in the NBA.
With just one sentence during the recent NBA All Star weekend, Jordan took it to the rim and left reporters in stitches with an over-the-top brag.
Jordan said James Harden’s streak of 30 straight 30-point games and Russell Westbrook’s 10 straight triple-doubles are both impressive and tough to accomplish.
But the Charlotte Hornets owner said Tuesday — flashing a big grin — that there is one accomplishment tougher than both those feats: “Which is harder from the player’s standpoint? Six championships by all means.”
There is only one Michael Jordan.
