The Miami Marlins on Thursday traded All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto to the Philadelphia Phillies for catcher Jorge Alfaro, two pitching prospects and international bonus pool allocation, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. The person confirmed the trade to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the teams had not announced it. Along with Alfaro, the Marlins acquired highly regarded pitchers Sixto Sanchez and Will Stewart . . .OutfielderHunter Pence, 35, a three-time All-Star who played at Texas-Arlington, agreed to a minor league contract with his hometown Texas Rangers and will attend major league spring training . . . The Kansas City Royals signed righthanded reliever Brad Boxberger, 30, to a $2.2 million contract for this season, adding a veteran arm to a bullpen with plenty of jobs available in spring training . . . Zach Britton, the 31-year-old New York Yankees reliever, said his first name going forward will be spelled “Zack” with a “k” at the end.

Chiefs to extend Mahomes
Kansas City Chiefs general manager Bret Veach said the team is already planning their future around signing quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a long-term contract, even though the NFL MVP, who threw for more than 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns this season, won’t be eligible to sign an extension until after next season . . . Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton, recovering from shoulder surgery on Jan. 24, said the most disheartening part of last season was his inability to throw deep, which left him exposed to opposing defenses . . . New Orleans Saints defensive tackle David Onyemata was cited for misdemeanor possession of marijuana by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Department . . . Bengals coach Zac Taylor has made his first hires, bringing in longtime friends Brian Callahan as offensive coordinator and Jim Turner, a 1988 Boston College alum from Braintree, as offensive line coach, along with James Casey as tight ends coach and Ben Martin as assistant offensive line coach.

BC sends 7 to NFL Combine
A school record seven standouts from Boston College’s 2018 football team earned invitations to the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine Feb. 24-March 4 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, including: defensive lineman Zach Allen, cornerback Hamp Cheevers, safety Lukas Denis, safety Will Harris, offensive lineman Chris Lindstrom, edge rusher Wyatt Ray and tight end Tommy Sweeney . . . Texas backup quarterback Shane Buechele will transfer to SMU once he graduates in May. Buechele was the Longhorns starter in 2016 when he set several Texas freshman passing records. He was No. 2 behind Sam Ehlinger this past season as Texas went 10-4 and beat Georgia in the Sugar Bowl . . . Ramon Jefferson, a standout University of Maine football player, was arrested and charged with domestic violence assault, stemming from an incident Wednesday night at a Bangor residence where police interviewed a woman who identified Jefferson as the suspect. Jefferson was released on bail and is scheduled to be arraigned March 4 . . . Emese Hof (21 points, 13 rebounds) and Beatrice Mompremier (18 points, 12 rebounds) had double-doubles for the host No. 25 Miami Hurricanes women’s basketball team in a 72-65 upset over No. 4 Notre Dame, which was held to a season-low point total after shooting a season-low 37 percent.

Sala’s body found in wreck
Police confirmed the body recovered from a plane in the English Channel is that of Argentine soccer player Emiliano Sala. Dorset police made the announcement on Thursday evening after a coroner’s examination of the body, which was recovered from the seabed wreckage of the plane on Wednesday. Sala, who had just signed with Premier League club Cardiff, and pilot David Ibbotson were the only people onboard the small aircraft flying from Nantes, France, to Cardiff that disappeared over the English Channel last month . . . NBC’s Mike Tirico will call his first NHL game on Feb. 20 when Detroit hosts Chicago on NBC Sports Network’s “Wednesday Night Hockey.” . . . American ski champion Lindsey Vonn sat out downhill training two days after crashing in the super-G at the world championships in Are, Sweden. Vonn got the wind knocked out of her after hitting the safety nets and bruised her face and right eye. Vonn, 34, has announced she will retire after Sunday’s downhill . . . Gian Franco Kasper, the president of the International Ski Federation, apologized after a story in a Swiss newspaper quoted him as saying he preferred countries with “dictatorships” to host major sports competitions. Kasper said his comments “were not meant to be taken literally.”
