Cricket team’s different approach to end of season trip

SOUTH Burnett cricketers will be trading the beach for a drought affected Queensland town for their end of season celebrations in April.

The Wooroolin Warriors will be on a bus bound for Thallon in southwest Queensland to play the town’s cricket team.

Trevor Hansen hatched the idea when he was visiting his daughter who works as a teacher in St George.

He took a photo of the drought-stricken cricket ground, shared it with his team and they agreed it would be a good idea to organise a match.

“We are hoping the game will give them a kick along out there and show them that we care,” Hansen said.

“They are very happy that someone is coming to play a game of cricket. Hopefully we can get a return game in a few years time in the South Burnett.”

The South Burnett team will make a donation to the Thallon Progress Association while in town.

The team aims to donate $500 to the town through their Brisbane Heat cricket bat raffle.

All money from the raffle will be donated to the association with the players funding their own bus tickets and beer.

Tickets in the cricket bat raffle are available at the Carrollee Hotel, Kingaroy Plumbing Works and Mr Minute Kingaroy.

The Warriors will leave town on April 5, stay the night in St George, travel to Thallon for their cricket match on Saturday, April 6, before returning home the next day.
