Grad transfer helps shore up OU O-Line

Oklahoma football added a major piece to its 2019 offensive line with the recent commitment from graduate transfer offensive lineman R.J. Proctor.

Proctor — whose list of suitors included Ohio State, Texas, Florida State, Penn State and several others — will be immediately eligible to play once he enrolls in the university and should jump into the competition for  a starting spot at one of the guard positions for Oklahoma football.

Proctor has 12 starts under his belt at Virginia despite battling injuries through most of last season, making him one of only two Sooners 2019 offensive linemen to have started a collegiate game. However, he brings more than just experience to the Sooners, he’s a talented player with deceptive quickness and a mean streak when it comes to run blocking.

After watching his film, Proctor is especially good at combo blocks and chipping one man on his way to the next level. In the Sooners’ counter-heavy offense he’ll be asked to pull, trap and block downfield quite a bit, something that plays into his strengths.

The gain is also a loss for rival Texas, which is pushing hard in the graduate transfer market to shore up its own offensive line.

Should he win one of the starting guard jobs over other contenders Marquise Hays and Tyrese Robinson the Sooners will be able to lean on experience in the interior of the line alongside returning true sophomore starter Creed Humphrey while they break in a trio of new players around them.

Oklahoma football has been active on the graduate transfer market this offseason, already landing arguably the top name in the portal in former national champion and SEC offensive player of the year Jalen Hurts. It remains to be seen as to whether the Sooners will pursue any other options on the market as more names enter the portal at the conclusion of spring football.
