SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men’s tennis team extended its winning streak to four matches with a 9-0 sweep of Colby-Sawyer College in a non-conference match on Sunday afternoon at Sportime Tennis Club.
Sophomores Max Egna and Austin Egna and freshman Ioannis Binopoulos were all double winners for Union (4-0) on the way to the victory, while nine players altogether picked up at least one win against the Chargers.
The Egnas started off the day with an 8-1 win at first doubles, putting Union on the board first. The freshman tandem of Nick Weitzman and Cameron Klepper also posted an 8-3 win at third doubles, while Binopoulos and senior Zach Kaplan completed the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win at the second flight.
Junior Del Schunk was the first Dutchman to finish up in singles play, grabbing the fourth point with an efficient 6-2, 6-1 win at second singles, while Max Egna sealed the win by sweeping the second set in a 6-3, 6-0 fourth-singles victory. Binopoulos and Austin Egna posted their second wins of the day at first and third singles, respectively, by the same 6-1, 6-2 scores as well.
At fifth singles, junior Justin Gold took the first set 6-2 but found himself down 3-0 in the second, only to storm back with six straight wins to win in straight sets. Freshman Jack Andre then completed the sweep at sixth singles, winning the final four points of the supertiebreaker to pull out a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory.
After taking some time off for finals, Union will head south to Hilton Head, S.C., for Spring Break, where the team will play four matches beginning on March 24 against the University of St. Thomas.
