Casino operator partners with World Series champions to continue sports gambling push.
World Series champions the Boston Red Sox have become the first Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise to team up with a casino and gambling company after announcing a deal with MGM Resorts International.
The multi-year partnership designates MGM as the official and exclusive resort casino of the Red Sox, who last year beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 in a best-of-seven game set to win their ninth World Series.
Under the terms of the deal, MGM will benefit from branding behind home plate at the team’s iconic Fenway Park, as well as on the Green Monster left field wall. MGM will also receive airtime through Red Sox radio and various other media outlets operated by the franchise.
In addition, the casino operator will gain the right offer unique experiences at Fenway Park to fans and customers, while it will also host a series of promotional events at its MGM Springfield venue in Massachusetts.
“MGM has set the standard in the hospitality and entertainment industry and their recent expansion into the Commonwealth makes them a clear partner,” said Red Sox president and chief executive Sam Kennedy. “We’re thrilled to welcome them to the Red Sox family and look forward to a long collaboration.”
MGM has made a series of moves since last year’s US Supreme Court ruling to relax sports betting laws in the country. The company already holds partnerships with three of North America’s major leagues – the National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Hockey League (NHL) and MLB itself – and also has agreements with a handful of individual teams.
“Combining the two iconic brands of the Red Sox and MGM Resorts will create a new one-of-a-kind fan experience for baseball fans unique to not only New England and MGM Springfield, but the rest of the country,” added MGM chairman and chief executive Jim Murren.
“We look forward to continuing our work and partnerships in the world of professional sports and building on our success as a worldwide entertainment leader.”
