Syracuse’s Jamal Custis, Chris Slayton perform well at NFL Combine

The Syracuse Orange’s initial spring practice wasn’t the only SU football activity this weekend. Two former Syracuse players — Jamal Custis and Chris Slayton — were also in action at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Both players were looking for impressive weekends to improve their respective odds of getting drafted this spring. Here’s a quick rundown of how both performed:

Jamal Custis

Custis recorded a 4.50-second 40-yard dash, which was pretty high up there on the overall wide receivers list for the drill. His vertical leap was 34.5 inches (30th among receivers) and broad jump was 124 inches (12th). He didn’t participate in the bench press, three-cone, 20-yard shuttle or 60-yard shuttle.

His hand measurements were 10 and 7/8 inches — largest of any receiver at this year’s Combine. The NFL’s official Combine site gives him a better than average change of making a roster, though getting drafted is still up for debate.

Chris Slayton

Slayton’s 40-yard dash didn’t look like Custis’s, but of course, it also didn’t have to as a defensive tackle. He notched a 5.13-second 40, which was among the top 25 of all defensive linemen in Indianapolis. His 28 bench press reps were tied for 11th-best at his position. Slayton had a vertical leap of 29 inches, broad jump of 101 inches, and 20-yard shuttle of 4.73 seconds. He did not participate in the three-cone drill or 60-yard shuttle.

The NFL’s official Combine site sees his draft potential and roster staying power about the same as Custis’s. He didn’t necessarily display the measureables that Custis did, but also didn’t hurt his stock.
