WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Both Forrest Whitley and Kyle Tucker departed spring training on Tuesday, part of the Astros’ most sweeping and noteworthy round of cuts since reporting to camp.

The organization’s top two prospects were among seven total Houston players to be either optioned or reassigned to minor league camp. Players on a team’s 40-man roster — like Tucker — are optioned while non-roster invitees are reassigned.

Tucker and pitcher Rogelio Armenteros were each optioned. Tucker, the lanky 22-year-old outfielder who had a disappointing major league debut last season, struggled in Grapefruit League play. He struck out eight times and recorded seven hits — only three of which went for extra bases.

Whitley was reassigned along with fellow top-10 pitching prospects Corbin Martin and J.B. Bukauskas. Manager A.J. Hinch was adamant both before and during spring training that none of the trio was in contention to make the team, nor were they candidates for the vacant fifth starter spot.

Pitcher Brandon Bielak and infielder Alex DeGoti were the other players reassigned.
