Mario Tennis Aces – What is it?

Mario Tennis Aces is the newest in a long line of Mario-based tennis games that began way back on the Nintendo 64 with Mario Tennis. Since then we’ve seen versions of the game on the Wii U, too, in the form of Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash.

This game will include more features than its predecessors, though, by including a full story mode – the first time a game in the series has done so since the Game Boy Advance entry in the franchise.

The game will see characters such as Mario, Luigi, Waluigi and Wario take to the courts to determine who is the best tennis player in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Mario Tennis Aces – Gameplay

Nintendo has promised there will be a variety of missions, boss battles and more in the dedicated story mode, which will go further than just seeing you face your rivals in standard tennis matches. Piranha Plants will grow in size and fire projectiles at you that you must deflect in some encounters, for example.

There will also be a series of multiplayer modes, too: we’re assuming there will be 2v2 and 4v4 options on the courts if previous games in the series are anything to go by.

Expect local co-op support courtesy of multi Joy-Con compatibility, too. This could be your next big party game.

Mario Tennis Aces – Release Date

There is no official release date for the game yet, aside from the vague Spring 2018 window Nintendo has already outlined.

Judging by Nintendo’s financial year, though, Spring 2018 could last anywhere up until May – we’ll keep you updated as soon as any more news regarding the release date breaks.

Here’s what Nintendo has officially stated about the game itself:

• A new Mario tennis game is bringing a new level of skill and competition to the Nintendo Switch system
• Mario steps onto the court in classy tennis garb for intense rallies against a variety of characters in full-blown tennis battles
• New wrinkles in tennis gameplay will challenge your ability to read an opponent’s position and stroke to determine which Shot will give you the advantage.
• This time the game adds the first story mode since the Mario tennis game on the game boy advance system
• Offers a new flavor of tennis gameplay, with a variety of missions, boss battles and more.
