President Trump, who has said he doesn’t like to settle lawsuits, has settled with former members at his golf course in Jupiter, Fla.
Golfers who held memberships to the Ritz-Carlton Golf Course before Trump bought it 2012 contend he failed to give back their refundable deposits, ranging from $35,000 to $210,000, after the ownership change.
In the settlement entered in U.S. District Court Friday, Trump National Golf Club agreed to pay nearly $5.44 million to the members, who sued in a class action. After legal fees, each of the plaintiffs will end up with about 71% of the refunds they sought, according to the ruling.
The court decision comes just weeks after Trump once again sued the Palm Beach County Property Appraiser over the valuation of his 18-hole golf club, seeking to lower his property tax bill by about 25%. The suit, filed in December, marks the fifth year in a row that Trump has disputed the property tax bill for the 131-acre facility featuring a Jack Nicklaus-designed course, according to the Palm Beach Post.
In an ongoing analysis of legal filings across the United States, USA TODAY has found that Trump and his businesses have been involved in thousands of legal actions in federal and state courts over the past three decades. They range from skirmishes with casino patrons to million-dollar real estate suits to personal defamation lawsuits.
The president’s golf courses have been at the center of several dozen lawsuits ranging from labor and personal injury claims to disputes over membership and dues. The legal battles are part of 4,095 lawsuits USA TODAY is tracking with an interactive tool.
