More than 50 children with disabilities got a taste of what many of us take for granted – the joy and satisfaction of playing sport – at the Rotary Dream Cricket Gala Day at Kurri Kurri on Wednesday.
Rotarians from Cessnock, Kurri Kurri, Rutherford-Telarah and Wallsend-Maryland joined together to conduct a fantastic day of fun for the young people in picture-perfect conditions at Kurri Kurri Sportsground.
Dream Cricket is designed with Year 3-to-6 students in mind, and uses specially-adapted activities that allow the students to develop skills such as hand eye coordination, movement skills and balance in a team environment, while having a great time. It also helps develop self-confidence and self-esteem among the students.
Each participant received a special gold medallion at the end of the day.
Dream Cricket coordinator, Past District Governor Greg Bevan said teachers from each of the schools were glowing in their praise of the program, and fully realised the benefit to each of those participants.
“Teachers have commented on how the program assists greatly in the development of person skills of the young people,” he said.
Mr Bevan thanked the Rotarians for organising the activities; local licensed clubs for their financial support, and the Kurri Kurri Rugby League Club for allowing the use of its facilities.
