West Noble receives $25,000 grant for football helmets | Advance Leader

LIGONIER — West Noble High School was awarded a $25,000 grant last week as part of a grand prize drawing event sponsored by the Indianapolis Colts and United Healthcare.

West Noble High School was one of 18 schools nominated and selected to attend a drawing held at Grand Park in Westfield. Assistant football coach Tony Mast helped start the process for West Noble High School by nominating the school.

Head football coach Monte Mawhorter, West Noble High School Assistant Principal Mike Burke and Athletic Director Tom Schermerhorn took part in the clinic that took place prior to the drawing. Former Penn State football player Andy Ryland instructed coaches and athletes on proper tackling techniques being taught by USA Football. Former offensive lineman of the Colts, Ryan Diem, also spoke to the group and shared his experiences as a football player and answered questions from the crowd. After Diem spoke, the 18 schools represented were put in a ping-pong ball hopper. The first 17 schools would win $1,000 towards new helmets and the final ping pong ball drawn would win a $25,000 grand prize.

Fortunately for the Chargers, the last ball drawn out of the hopper was No. 18, which represented West Noble. The $25,000 must be used to purchase helmets for the West Noble football program. According to Schermerhorn, the program is currently working with the helmet manufacturer SG Helmets to secure a helmet order.

Schermerhorn said, “Safety for our student athletes is always paramount. We are always working hard to make sure our football players are in a high quality helmet. This will obviously help take the financial component out of the equation. We are so thankful when groups such as the Indianapolis Colts and United Healthcare contribute to such a great cause.”

Mawhorter said, “This is exciting for our program. We are so appreciative of the Colts and United Healthcare. This will be good for our kids in the program. Not very many programs can start from scratch with new helmets like we will be able to do. The kids are excited to see the new helmets and put them on. Football season can’t come soon enough!”
