Tennis at the DAC? Yes, Get Ready For Another Championship, Philly!

Drexel Athletics is thrilled to partner with the Philadelphia Freedoms and World TeamTennis to stage world-class professional tennis at Drexel University’s Daskalakis Athletic Center (DAC) on our University City Campus. Starting at 2 p.m. on Aug. 5, you can watch all of the tennis excitement in person (and through half-off tickets!) or watch on ESPN2.

At Drexel Athletics, we pride ourselves for being exceptional hosts of athletic events and we will work hard to continue this tradition with the Philadelphia Freedoms.

For example, we have hosted the Olympic Trials in Table Tennis, the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Final Four, the U.S men’s and women’s Squash Open and even a National Championships in Women’s Basketball (WNIT), when the Dragons beat out Utah at the buzzer in 2010.

But we have never played tennis at the DAC and we are excited about this opportunity. Tennis is a natural fit for Drexel Athletics. Not only do the Dragons have a very successful men’s and women’s NCAA Division I tennis team under the leadership of our charismatic head coach Mehdi Rhazali, but Senior Associate Athletic Director Laura White has been the NCAA Division I chair for men’s and women’s tennis.

The tennis format that has been created for World TeamTennis is fantastic. It is not only fast-paced and exciting to watch, but it is collaborative and an international model for how men and women can play and compete together, not only in sports but metaphorically also in society.

The Freedoms will be going for their first World Team Tennis Championship since 2006. With a league best 11-1 record, the Philadelphia Freedoms have dominated their way through the regular season and clinched home court advantage for the World TeamTennis finals.

So congrats to the Philadelphia Freedoms’ pro tennis team for making it to the finals, and to Coach Craig Kardon, General Manager Barbara Perry and team owner Billie Jean King. We are looking very much forward to an exciting championship Sunday and are inviting Philadelphia and Drexel’s best sports fans down to the DAC at 33rd and Market Streets to join us in cheering on the World Team Tennis finals.

Tickets for the Drexel community are only $10 with a special discount code. When buying tickets online, use our SPECIAL OFFER CODE: FINAL and get tickets for JUST $10 as the Freedoms play for a chance to hoist the King Trophy!

Watch the Philadelphia Freedoms compete in the World TeamTennis Finals this Sunday at Drexel University. Let’s bring another world championship home to Philly!
