Man, 81, injured when tractor-trailer runs redlight and hits his golf cart

A tractor-trailer collided with a golf cart Aug. 7 near Chateau Elan and sent the cart’s driver to the hospital with serious injuries, according to Georgia State Patrol.

Cpl. C.E. Parker said Austin Maxwell Smith, 29, of Gainesville, was driving a tractor-trailer eastbound on Ga. 211/Old Winder Highway around 2:15 p.m. Aug. 7.

Parker said Smith “ran the red traffic signal” at the intersection with Golf Club Drive/Liberty Church Road and collided with a golf cart.

The golf cart’s driver, Dana Wilfred Dow, 81, was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. Hospital officials said he was in “satisfactory condition” Monday, Aug. 13.

Smith was cited for failure to obey a traffic control device.
