Following his opening round match win in Cincinnati, Roger Federer was asked by Tennis Channel what’s the rule in tennis he would like to see it being changed. Federer gave an interesting answer. ‘I would probably add more best of five sets matches. At Masters 1000s I think we have opportunities to have more best of five sets matches in the finals, definitely the World Tour Finals, because I think it’s quite unfortunate that on the ATP Tour we don’t have any best of five sets match. We only have at the Slams, Davis Cup and then at the Olympic finals. so I feel that’s a bit of opportunity for players protection for injuries, because I started in the beginning with more best of five sets finals and then they completely went away, it’s a little bit a pity but I understand the reasons’, the Swiss admitted.
Commenting on differences between practice session and competitive matches, Federer added: ‘In practice if you hit a double fault, like, Well, it’s not going to happen again, or if it does, fine, you know. It’s not the end of the world. Whereas in a match situation, you’re like, If I double fault again, this means I’ll be broken. Am I going to be able to turn the tide or not? All of a sudden, these thoughts go through your head in a match situation, which in a practice really doesn’t happen because you don’t worry as much. That can make you play better or much worse. I do believe usually it takes two or three matches to get going, like what I explained, like, aiming for the lines, finding the rhythm on the serve, you know, being able to serve very accurate, you know, time and time again, getting used to the balls, how the ball flies.’
